All of our operations maintain an active safety program, including training and education for our employees. Our commitment is echoed in our internal motto, "Safety First". Our excellent safety record is not something that just happens. It is the result of motivated, skilled people working within a system that is carefully planned and proven to work.

Statement of Safety Policy

It is the policy of this company to strive for the highest safety standards on our projects. Safety does not occur by chance. It is the result of careful attention to all company operations by those who are directly and indirectly involved. Employees at all levels must work diligently to execute the company's policy of maintaining safety and occupational health.

Our safety program has been developed to assure compliance with Federal, State and Local regulations with particular emphasis on the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970 (OSHA), and the OSHA requirements that apply to our construction operations. It is the obligation of all employees to be knowledgeable of the standards established by these agencies and to implement the rules and regulations contained therein on projects under their direction.

Regard for the safety of the general public and our own employees and the employees of our subcontractors is a supreme responsibility of all levels of our organization. We intend to prevent any accidental injury, property damage, fire damage and occupational illness, any of which could result in human suffering. Accidents, even minor ones, cause pain, both physical and mental. Prevention of injury is a goal well worthy of our achieving.

A safe operation is organized, clean and efficient. If every employee views accidents in the same way we consider all other aspects of our operations we will be in a better position not only to control accidents, but also to improve the total performance of our company. It is, therefore, of utmost importance that all aspects of our safety program be strictly adhered to and that the intent of this program be followed to the letter.

Our Safety Program:

  • Defines formal responsibility for accident prevention. Responsibility flows through the organization along functional lines.
  • Accident prevention provisions including safety orientation, education and training for supervisors and employees.
  • Guidelines for pre-job planning including a copy of all pertinent regulations.
  • Weekly jobsite safety inspections conducted by management and certified safety staff.
  • Specific policy requiring that each new employee receives orientation in the DVB Safety Program and signs off for acknowledgment.
  • Emergency procedures, including the requirement that each superintendent takes a 10-hour OSHA training course.
  • Policy requiring the holding of weekly jobsite/toolbox safety meetings.
  • Procedures for investigating and reporting accidents
  • A drug and alcohol program
  • Proactive Safety Incentives Program

Safety isn’t just a topic for slogans at the DVB; it is our top priority in everything we do. We constantly review the way we work to reduce and eliminate the risk of injuries or accidents, because we realize our work can be dangerous. In our frequent safety training, employees are encouraged and rewarded for finding ways to reduce risks in every task and to speak up if they see risky conditions or behavior. We know our emphasis on safety is effective because our safety record is well below the industry average.
